Fête des Lumières

About this time last year I had the chance to travel to Lyon to see the Fête des Lumières. This is a celebration that lights the city with light shows and candles in churches, city square, parks, the streets, bridges and more.

I was able to wander the streets, seeing crowds enjoying the night.  There were street performers and marching bands.  Christmas markets lined some streets and light displays lined others.  One square even had a ferris wheel, which of course was part of the light display.  Light shows were projected onto buildings including churches, the opera house and the city hall.

This year due to the attacks in Paris the celebration was altered from the normal festivities.  The focus was moved to lighting of candles, as a show of solidarity.

Although this year's celebration was changed, next year is intended to continue with the traditional activities.

December 1 | Advent Calendar

Last year during December I posted Christmas themed photos during the Christmas season. I will be continuing that tradition this year with my own advent calendar on this blog.

Notre Dame de Paris

In the days following the recent attacks in Paris, Notre Dame held a service.

There many people who came to the church for the service.  Even though many had to stand in the square in front of the building, there was a crowd throughout the service.  The crowd valued the chance to come together after the tragic events.

In the days after going to the service, I have seen many people continuing to go to cafés, restaurants and public events.  Although uncertainty and fear can easily consume, it is important to keep the spirit of the city unchanged by actions that attempt to spread terror.

All Saint's Day

This past week I did not have school because today is All Saint's Day. This break gave me a chance to visit some cities in Germany. I made sure to visit cemeteries while traveling, in part as a way to keep in mind those that have passed away.

Each of the cemeteries that I saw created a beautiful and peaceful green area in the middle of the large cities. These spaces were perfect for getting away from the noise and activity of the city. The quiet nature gave a perfect opportunity to think without distractions.

A little bit of peace and quiet can do a lot of good.

Herz-Jesu-Kirche Freiburg | Sabbeth Sites

Last year I was able to take a trip while studying in Germany. I had made sure I would see all the sites I was hoping to see. The last thing to plan was getting back to the town where I was staying.

I had to change buses in a city called Freiburg. Freiburg had not been on my list of places to see, but I had time to look around while waiting for my next bus to come.

I found the town to be a very nice place that is surrounded by nature as it is between the Rhein and the Black Forrest. Freiburg might not have been on my radar, but I look forward to the next time I end up somewhere that was not in my initial plans.
